 Book Discussion: 2012

This season, we are discussing books that have been made into movies.

15 May at 1:30 p.m.

True Grit
by Charles Portis

In the book, Mattie Ross recounts the story of her adventures at the age of fourteen when she undertook a quest to avenge her father’s death at the hands of a drifter named Tom Chaney, and how she got the incorrigible Marshal Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn and a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf (pronounced "La-beef") to help her achieve justice.

In 1969, True Grit was adapted for the screen as a Western starring John Wayne as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, Kim Darby as Mattie Ross, and Glen Campbell as LeBoeuf. The role won John Wayne Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

In 2010, another film adaptation written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, was released. It starred Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross and Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, and Matt Damon as LeBoeuf. This film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director(s) (The Coen Brothers), Best Actor in a Leading Role (Jeff Bridges), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Hailee Steinfeld), and Best Adapted Screenplay (The Coen Brothers); however, it did not win any Academy Awards.

Read the book, and then join the discussion to tell us what you think.

All welcome. Please bring your friends.
